Death Of a Relationship

Death of a relationship is a short story on break up, those emotions which run through a girls head the clouded judgement and fear of losing someone, enjoy.

It was another rainy day of monsoon as Anita sits in her car parked outside the coffee shop. Waiting for Karan to arrive, she sat there looking at her watch frantically knowing well enough to expect Karan to be on time, maybe, but it was just wishful thinking. Anita seems detached from the clamorous sounds of cars honking their horns and people trying to get shelter from the pouring rain. She sat there motionlessly as those tiny water droplets trying to grip onto the windshield but eventually rolling down. Her mind was as clouded as the weather outside with anxious thoughts making her mood damper than the roads that lay wet from the showering rains.

Humidity had made Anita’s stay in the car unbearable as she made a quick glance at the rear-view mirror straightened up her hair and darted toward the coffee shop avoiding the puddles to protect her new stilettos. As she entered, cool wind of air-conditioner brushed of her making her wonder why she did not think of waiting for him inside. She scanned the coffee place for a secluded place for two where she could talk to Karan without someone snooping on their conversation.  She sat on the couch at the end of the shop luckily behind a pillar that was ideal as she did not want to be disturbed. She placed her bag and mobile on the table in front of her, but then picking her mobile again to call Karan.
The bell rang... it rang again and on the 7th bell Karan picked up and without any greeting of hello or hey, he replied “I am on my way, be there in few minutes” and disconnected the call. Anita was furious with this habit of Karan’s, 'always in a hurry'. She tried to control her agitation wondering how she managed to be with this guy for four years. She continuously stared at the menu in her hand when a well-dressed waiter in his red uniform interrupted her chains of hastily running thoughts to ask about her order. Anita knew what she wanted but did not know how long Karan’s ‘few minutes’ would take. She politely smiled and asked for few more minutes of her own. The waiter went behind his big glass counter which displayed fresh cupcakes and pastries.
Karan enters chuckling with his sunglasses hanging on his shirt apparently chatting on whatsapp with someone who must have been really hilarious as he walks past Anita without noticing her. He then looks around, and finds her sitting behind a pillar. He walks up to her to give her a hug and apologizes for him being late. He snaps his fingers asking for the waiter and places an order for both of them without asking Anita what she wanted. Although Karan made the correct order that was cappuccino, what she wanted but she felt her right of ordering was somehow taken away from her. Karan enquires about the dull look on Anita’s face and apologizes again for being late. He was oblivious to the fact that it has been long back that she was accustomed to his lack of time management. Anita rolled her eyes that made Karan enraged and he hissed in disgust at Anita's contemptuous look. The smile with which he had entered has now vanished from his face and the warm hug that he gave has also lost its warmth and left were two people contemplating why they decided to come in the first place.
Anita not wasting time said to Karan. “Listen this is not working out” as she tried to hold back her tears, acting strong while these mere words were breaking her from inside. “Look we both know what is the best thing to do” she continued. Anita thought these particular choices of words would have sufficed and should be strong enough to get past Karan’s defenses. Not getting a reaction from Karan, Anita resorted to say whatever she thought was wrong with their relationships, her mind kept praying to God for a solution. She wanted a Justification or a miracle that would take them back to the time when they both were happy. She hoped for Karan to understand and somehow find a quick fix to get them out of this rut.
The waiter came with their order and placed it on the glass table, asked if they wanted anything else. Karan with a gesture of his hand rejected his inquiry. Both of them had not said a word for a while now, and Anita started wondering where did this relationship started to go wrong. She tried to reminisce back at the blissful times but all she could remember right now where the constant fights that they were having. She remembered all she had done for Karan and how much she had changed for him. Anita now fueled with rage over her thoughts says “you know what Karan, I didn’t take that job at U.K. just to be with you-” Anita cut in mid-sentence as Karan started to raise his voice. Anita lowers her as she knew only two things could come out of this. Either he would admit to his faults and somehow they will manage to drag this relationship forward or he may say something hurtful like he always does.
Karan puts down his café latte, “You have changed Anita, and you are right, I too think this relationship is not worth fighting for any more.” Karan could see Anita’s eyes watering up; he closes his eyes not able to bare the anguish that he had laid upon Anita, “I hope all the happiness in the world, I am sorry those moments of happiness were not with me but at least we have few good memories,” with those words’ Karan stood up and went to the counter to pay the cheque. Anita still sitting there as she tries to digest what just happened. Though she was prepared for this, it felt like her heart had suddenly given up and all the pain and sorrow had descended upon her all at once. She tries to look up at Karan one last time as he walks off wearing those sunglasses covering those small brown eyes. Her eyes began to swell up with tears.
She sat there dejectedly, wondering how her whole world came crashing down, was it because of Her or was it that Karan had found someone else. She pondered on how she lost a friend, a lover, her man somewhere along in this bitterness that ended a four year-long relationship. She thought of many things that she could do to prevent “DEATH OF HER RELATIONSHIP.”

  16. If I'm not mistaken their characters are growing every story.
Are ceasing to be and adolescents are becoming adults.
I may be wrong but Arjuunn was what I realized.
    Very good.
